We believe your child's vision exam should be thorough and efficient. There are multiple components in a child's comprehensive exam that we find critical for properly diagnosing and treating, as well as, offering preventative options.
Our exam will include a physical eye health examination, to rule out any ocular disease on the internal and external parts of the eyes. It will also assess your child's depth perception, color vision, binocular skills, and focusing skills. An objective measurement will also be taken of your child's refractive error to determine potential need for correction. Lastly, the doctor will discuss the medical finding, visual needs and corrective options.
The American Optometric Association recommends that pre-school children receive a complete vision exam at the ages of six months, three years and five years. It is particularly important that a child have a complete evaluation in the summer prior to entry into Kindergarten. While in school, early evaluations are highly recommended.
Treatment of Ocular Diseases
Diseases of the eye can occur quietly over time or in a moments notice. Because of this your eye doctor must be able to diagnose and treat these conditions confidently. Dr. Schmidt, O.D. is considered to be an expert in the treatment of eye disease. He completed a residency in Ocular disease and is one of the few optometrists in the nation to complete a post-graduate fellowship in glaucoma; making him uniquely qualified to manage problem conditions.
Glaucoma: People with glaucoma usually have no symptoms. It is a disease of the optic nerve characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the optic nerve over time. It is diagnosed by thorough evaluation of the optic nerve as well as special testing with instruments such as the Retinal Laser Tomograph and Visual field analyzer that are available at Omni Eye Specialists. Treatment is usually with eye drops but laser or surgical intervention may be needed.
Macular Degeneration: is a thinning condition of the retina that is common in older patients. It is potentially blinding, but is best combated when diagnosed early. With new laser imaging technology, available at Omni Eye Specialists, this condition can be detected earlier than ever before.
Treatment for this condition includes nutritional supplements, drops or revolutionary new treatments that were not available even three years ago.
Cataracts: are degenerative changes of the Lens inside the eye. The normally clear lens becomes cloudy over time. This condition causes blurred vision both up close and far away. The good news is that this is easily treated. Our surgeons replace the cataract with a clear implant. Our no-stitch technique means an extremely quick recovery and generally no glasses are needed for distance vision.
At Omni Eye Specialists we offer many different surgical consultations. Our main surgical consults are for Glaucoma, Cataract, Refractive and Ocular Plastic Surgery.
Glaucoma Surgery involves either laser treatment or making a cut in the eye to reduce the intraocular pressure. The type of surgery our doctors recommend will depend on the type and severity of your glaucoma and the general health of your eye.
Cataract Surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of your eye and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is used to treat the clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye (cataract). Our doctors will evaluate and recommend the appropriate time to remove the cataract. A cataract consultation and removal will completely transform your vision and improve the quality of your life.
Refractive Eye Surgery is any eye surgery used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease or eliminate dependency on glasses or contact lenses. This can include various methods of surgical remodeling of the cornea or cataract surgery. The most common methods today use excimer lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. Successful refractive eye surgery can reduce or cure common vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, as well as degenerative disorders like keratoconus. If you have a refractive error, such as nearsightedness (myopia),farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism or presbyopia , refractive surgery is a method for correcting or improving your vision. Our Eye Doctors will determine the best timing to make a world of difference with your vision.
